Acadians At Home 1765 $9.00
Frank J. Pothier
Sentinel Printing Ltd. 1957.
(from the introduction)
In these few pages the author has attempted to present a synopsis of the intimate life of the Arcadians of South-western Nova Scotia-their beliefs, customs, aptitudes and adaptability to changing conditions.
Much has been written about the Arcadians concerning their deportation and exile, but very little attempt has been made to present them in their everyday lives.
By 1771 a group of Arcadians were settled in Yarmouth County. Around this time Louis Meuse, Louis Bourque, Pierre Meuse and Pierre Surette were granted some eleven hundred acres of land which comprised Ste. Anne (now Ste. Anne du Ruisseau and Eel Brook) and Quinan. This land is inhabited by their descendants who have kept the same traditions and customs....

A History of Moncton, New Brunswick - Town & City 1855-1965 $24.95
Lloyd A. Machum
New Brunswick: City of Moncton 1965
(from the end flaps) "Moncton was first incorporated as a town in 1855. This book, written in connection with the celebration of 75 years as a City, covers the 110 years since the first incorporation. In 1855, The Bend was a small but bustling village of about 800 persons, thriving on the economy of shipbuilding and sea trade. It was the enthusiasm of the businessmen of that time that led to the application for incorporation. The book first describes the shipbuilding era and the men and businesses connected with it and the shipping trade.
Moncton's first incorporation was Inspired by over-optimism and was a little premature, and with the decline in shipbuilding the town's charter lapsed in 1862. However, the railway was already being built before the shipbuilding had begun to decline, and the second stage of Moncton's prosperity based on the railroad is described, including the second incorporation as a town in 1875.
The rapid growth of Moncton following the location of the I.C.R. shops here is accounted for with a description of the industries that followed the Corning of the railway and the men and institutions and organizations most concerned with Moncton's growth in the last decades of the nineteenth century.
An attempt has been made to cover all aspects of Moncton's history. Two chapters have been devoted to sports and three to Moncton's part in the two wars. The coming of the automobile and the airplane and their effect on life in Moncton have been described. Schools, governments, lodges, clubs, churches and other organizations have not been overlooked. Two chapters are given to the depression of the 1930's and the period of recovery.
The later chapters deal with the phenomenal growth of the City in the last three decades, both physically and economically, and of the persons, enterprises, organizations and institutions responsible as Moncton's favourable location which has stood it in good stead in the shipping and railway eras contributes to its development as the distribution centre of the Atlantic Provinces. Above all, the book is the history of people, and the activities of as many people as possible have been included."
