Cape Cod Architecture
$24.95
Clair Baisly
Orleans, Mass: Parnassus Imprints, 1989
(from the end flaps) This delightful book treats the
architecture of Cape Cod with a lightness of touch that belies the
erudition of the author and the seriousness with which she goes about her
task. Covering the full range of styles to be found on the cake throughout
its history, she pays particular attention to the structural details the
materials used and the tools employed by the owner/architect/builders of
the 18th and 19th-century.
She is equally concerned with the way architecture holds a mirror society
from which it springs. As she wanted her introduction, "architecture
is the great an honest recorder of our human history. Our built
environment is the direct intangible expression of our needs, our
interests, our social, financial and religious patterns. It holds our
viewpoint as individuals as a nation to scrutiny, to analysts and to
comprehension. This is particularly clear to those who deserve live on
Cape Cod today."

Nantucket
The History of Nantucket Island Bibliography $35.00
Marie M Coffin
Nantucket: 1970
A bibliography of source material with index and inventory.
(From the Preface) The need for a definitive source of
information that catalogues all the known data pertaining to the history of
Nantucket Island has long been recognized by those with a real interest in
this historical landmark, discovered in 1602.
As the logical organization to undertake such a task, the Nantucket
Historical Trust began in 1968 accumulating detailed information on all the
material that could be discovered. The present location has been described
wherever possible. The result is, so far as can be determined, the first
Bibliography of Source Material on the History of Nantucket Island.
Covered in this work is an inventory of important documents, old maps
and charts, portraits and pictures, scrapbooks, logbooks and records of
various kinds having to do with the island of Nantucket and its historical
past. It is the purpose of the Nantucket Historical Trust to preserve in
this manner a cataloguing of invaluable material, much of which might
otherwise be lost, forgotten, or destroyed.

The Strike of 1928 (New Bedford Mass.) $8.00 (New Book list,
18.00)
Daniel Georgianna
New Bedford: Spinner Publications 1993
The textile industry in New Bedford and Fall River typified the 1920s - drastic wage cuts
took place amidst growing productivity while manufacturers put profits elsewhere. In the
spring of 1928, thirty-five thousand people in New Bedford and Fall River began a
six-month long strike against a 10% wage cut, marking New England's largest strike of the
'20s. It was a time when a transient textile industry sought lower production costs, and
New England's position as the textile center of the world was giving way to the might of
southern competition.
The mill workers received wide support from local merchants, newspapers and clergy, but
ethnic and religious divisions kept the strikers divided. At the strike's core, the local
conservative craft unions clashed with the militant industrial union sponsored by the
Communist Party. In the end, these divisions, aided by the declining economy of textiles,
the power of the owners and the coming winter, defeated the strike.
The Strike of '28 begins with a look at New Bedford's world dominance as a whaling port
and the use of whaling capital in building one of the most important textile centers in
the world. The book explores the development of the mill community, mill expansion and
working conditions leading to the events in 1928. The story closes with the aftermath of
the strike when both unions disappeared and the CIO came to New Bedford. First-hand
interviews with strike participants and leaders heighten the story's drama and emotion.
160 pages, softbound, good condition.
One Whaling Family $14.95
Edited by Harold Williams
Boston: Riverside Press, Houghton Mifflin 1964
PART 1 is from the journal of Eliza Azelia Griswold Williams, a who went on a whaling
voyage with her husband from September 7, 1858, to October 26, 1861. Her husband, Captain
Thomas William Williams, was one of the youngest whaling captains. His early voyages as
master established his reputation as a "lucky captain" and a master of men. Her
journal describes the life on a whaler and the places they visited. Two children were born
on this voyage and they continued to go to sea with their parents for many years.
The papers of the ship for this voyage, the crew list and their stores carried on this
voyage are added to show what care was required in preparation for a long voyage.
Part 2 is an address made by the son, William Fish Williams, before a men's club in New
Bedford, Massachusetts, in which he puts the facts of the great loss of whale ships in
1871 into the record of history. He tells how Captain Williams' ship, the Monticello, was
trapped with thirty-one others by the ice in the Arctic Ocean, and how he and his family
and the crew all escaped with their lives.
Part 3 is the story of a voyage (1873-74) in the whaler Florence during which young
William Fish Williams, born on his mother's first voyage, became a member of the crew and
a boatsteerer, or junior officer. This voyage was one of many troubles. The son has
attempted to write the true story of the American whalemen and to correct some of the
misrepresentations by writers who did not understand the rigging of a whale ship. The boy
knew a whale ship from stem to stern and every process of whaling. This section of the
book is a record for posterity about the glory of the American seamen.
Table of Contents:
1) The Voyage of the Florida, 1858-1861 from the journal of Eliza Azelia Williams
including crew list 1858-1861 and Outfitting the Florida, 1858, Description of the Florida

Ocean in 1871. Address by William Fish Williams to the Brooks Club, New Bedford,
Massachusetts, in 1902. The wreck season of '71, Statement signed by Whaleship masters
before abandoning their ships. 3) The Voyage of the Florence, 1873-1874, from a manuscript
by William Fish Williams. Appendix I. Whaling Family: Captain Thomas William Williams,
Eliza Azelia Williams, Lewis Watkins Williams, Thomas Stancel Williams, William Fish
Williams, Mary Watkins Williams. Appendix II. Whaling History. 11 illustrations.
