Maine Towns
Augusta, Maine $16.99
Frank H. Sleeper
Arcadia publishing, 1995
On Feb. 24th 1827, the legislative act making Augusta Maine's state capital was
signed. Since that time, politics and government have played a central role in
the development of Augusta. In this fascinating pictorial history Frank H.
sleeper uses Augusta's political heritage as a springboard in the exploration of
the many faces of this dynamic city.
Augusta contains a wealth of images, from the businesses on water Street during
its heyday, to the Augusta millionaires semi--pro baseball team, to daily life
as it has been lived over the past century. It introduces us to the doers and
shakers in Augusta's history, and follows the development of the city's Franco
American community. As the 21st century approaches, this concise and compelling
history takes us on voyage of discovery into the past. It is a journey some will
find nostalgic, others informative, but one that will be enjoyed by all.

Images of America Series.
(from the back cover) Bangor is a city which has grown in many ways since
Jacob Buswell and his family, the first white settlers, built their log
cabin by the Penobscot River in 1769. Over the course of the 19th
century Bangor developed into a cosmopolitan center of Maine, but to this
day it retains some of the proud characteristics of a town that was once
the lumbering capital of the world.
Collected in this fascination visual are over 200 photographs which
together reflect this rich and diverse history…
Richard R. Shaw is an editor and writer for the Bangor Daily News, and is
considered its resident historian.

Raymond Then and Now - Volume II $30.00
Prepared
by Ernest Knight (Inscribed by the author)
Denmark, ME: Raymond Woman’s Club, 1986
Great collection of vintage photos paired with a current photo and
commentary.
(From the preface) The Volume II of "Raymond Then and Now" presents
more of the old pictures that continue to appear subsequent to the printing
of Volume I. While there are undoubtedly many more pictures from the past
hidden away that will eventually either be brought out of their hiding
places or lost forever, it can be assumed that there will not be enough for
further inclusion. Someday, predicted by the current rapid growth and
changes in the Raymond scene, someone may be inspired to show in this
pictorial form the transition to condominiums, freeways and exotic
innovations compared to the pastoral atmosphere of the 1800's and the
compromises of the 1900's as presented in these collections.
The same observation made in the preface to Volume I applies equally well in
this extension and will not be repeated as the two will in all probability
be kept together as companion pieces. Unlike a book of words, once read and
shelved, pictures can be looked at repeatedly with resulting new
appreciation or understanding of what they show or say to the reader.
217 pages, 9x12 softbound, good condition, some marks on the cover.

Saco
Maine Then and Now: A Diverse Heritage $9.00
Peter N. Scontras, Editor
1994. Scontras Publishing Company, Saco, Maine
(from the back cover) Peter Scontras, born and raised in Saco, is a
noted photographer, avid local historian, and teacher at Saco Middle
School. His wife Bridget and he reside in their hometown where they
brought up their two children Carol-Anastasia and Nicholas Peter II.
Because of his 1990 Winter Brick poster and innovative research project
involving his Middle School English students, he was a co-recipient of
the first Roy P. and Maryllyn Fairfield Award for his contribution to
Saco history. In 1987 he was recognized as Saco Citizen of the Year for
organizing and chairing a committee of citizens that planned and funded
the Veterans' Monument in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Saco, Then and Now is truly a book of substance, a skillful
blend of photographs and a fascinating, revealing collection of oral
history that is the first in a series of presentations by Peter Scontras
that captures the rhythms that were and are Saco, Maine.
Dr. Roy P. Fairfield, the most published, respected Saco historian
of his time, states of Saco, Then and Now, "Local historians,
both professional and amateur, will enjoy the visual walks along Main
Street...The people's stories speak, one generation to another...few
will miss the kind of lives our ancestors lived...both in triumph and
tragedy, through enthusiasms and disappointments. Saco, Then and Now is
a major contribution to Saco's rich historical record, one providing a
living legacy...In short, we experience an intelligent choice of themes,
and it is exciting to anticipate what images his next volumes will
include." Enjoy this drama about one of Maine's first thriving
settlements...a unique historical community...Saco.”

Margaret Chase Smith's Skowhegan (Maine) $16.99
Frank H. Sleeper
Dover, NH: Arcadia Publishing, 1996
Images of America Series.
(from the back cover) Called "...the most influential woman in the history
of American politics," Senator Margaret Chase Smith always carried with her
a strong connection to her roots in Skowhegan, Maine. How did her years and
experiences in this community influence her strength of character and
lifetime commitment to public service? Author Frank H. Sleeper has searched
local archives to bring us rare photographs and new Connections between
Skowhegan and its famous senator.
In this illuminating pictorial history, readers enjoy unique views of
Skowhegan, with its historic buildings and riverfront, where Senator Smith
spent her first forty years. Her strong convictions and tolerance for
dissent, especially apparent in her famous "Declaration of Conscience"
speech against Senator Joe McCarthy, may well have come from her background
in Skowhegan.
With each turn of the page, we see this strikingly vibrant woman amidst her
community in school and at work, and through her lifetime commitment to
public service as one of the first women in the U.S. Senate. The over 200
images presented here, most from the Margaret Chase Smith Library and the
Maine Historic Preservation Commission, are sure to evoke fond memories for
the old and provide inspiration for the young.
