Raymond Then and Now – Volume II $30.00
Prepared by Ernest Knight (Inscribed by the author)
Denmark, ME: Raymond Woman’s Club, 1986
Great collection of vintage photos paired with a current photo and commentary.
(From the preface) The Volume II of “Raymond Then and Now” presents more of the old pictures that continue to appear subsequent to the printing of Volume I. While there are undoubtedly many more pictures from the past hidden away that will eventually either be brought out of their hiding places or lost forever, it can be assumed that there will not be enough for further inclusion. Someday, predicted by the current rapid growth and changes in the Raymond scene, someone may be inspired to show in this pictorial form the transition to condominiums, freeways and exotic innovations compared to the pastoral atmosphere of the 1800’s and the compromises of the 1900’s as presented in these collections.
The same observation made in the preface to Volume I applies equally well in this extension and will not be repeated as the two will in all probability be kept together as companion pieces. Unlike a book of words, once read and shelved, pictures can be looked at repeatedly with resulting new appreciation or understanding of what they show or say to the reader.
217 pages, 9×12 softbound, good condition, some marks on the cover.

Margaret Chase Smith’s Skowhegan (Maine) $16.99
Frank H. Sleeper
Dover, NH: Arcadia Publishing, 1996
Images of America Series.
(from the back cover) Called “…the most influential woman in the history of American politics,” Senator Margaret Chase Smith always carried with her a strong connection to her roots in Skowhegan, Maine. How did her years and experiences in this community influence her strength of character and lifetime commitment to public service? Author Frank H. Sleeper has searched local archives to bring us rare photographs and new Connections between Skowhegan and its famous senator.
In this illuminating pictorial history, readers enjoy unique views of Skowhegan, with its historic buildings and riverfront, where Senator Smith spent her first forty years. Her strong convictions and tolerance for dissent, especially apparent in her famous “Declaration of Conscience” speech against Senator Joe McCarthy, may well have come from her background in Skowhegan.
With each turn of the page, we see this strikingly vibrant woman amidst her community in school and at work, and through her lifetime commitment to public service as one of the first women in the U.S. Senate. The over 200 images presented here, most from the Margaret Chase Smith Library and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, are sure to evoke fond memories for the old and provide inspiration for the young.
