Scotland
Scottish Land-Names: Their Origin and Meaning $21.00
Sir Herbert Maxwell.
Baltimore: Heritage, 1998, (1894) reprint
Even in the briefest study of Scotland, it quickly becomes apparent that it is a place richly populated with names borne of a language different from that of the present day. Names like Blairquhan, Knockshoggle, Mollandhu and Ochteralinachan spring up from a map of Scotland and produce in our minds a picture of highland mists and claymore-wielding chieftains.
The fact is that every one of these place-names means something, and this work presents six highly informative lectures which provide a thorough understanding of Scottish place-names and the people, language, geography and history which produced them. Beginning with a discussion of general principles of the study of place-names, the author then explains the languages of Scottish place-names, including the two main branches of Celtic speech, differences between Gaelic and Welsh, Anglo-Saxon, Teutonic, Old Norse and Danish, and races such as the Iverian or Silurian, the Firbolg of the Irish Annalists, the Ernai, the Picts, and the Q Celts and the P Celts. Many topics are included, such as Norse and Saxon loan-words in English, mixture of languages in Strathclyde and other regions, relative antiquity of certain place-names, test-words for Gaelic, Welsh, Norse and other tongues, effects of aspiration and eclipse, and much else. Finally the author discusses the lesson of place names, that is, what they illustrate about the former appearance of the country, animals now extinct, vegetation and crops, succession of races, occupation and trades, crime and punishment, poverty and disease and other aspects of the past. At the end of the book is a very handy index of place names with their translations. If you’ve ever been mystified or intrigued by the fascinating tangle of names found in this area you will find this book hard to resist.

A Review of the Old Statistical Account
Maisie Steven
Aberdeen: 1995, Scottish Cultural Press
In 1790 Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster sent an exhaustive questionnaire to every parish minister in Scotland, covering such diverse subjects as lifestyle, customs, industry, agriculture, geology and wildlife. his aim was to use the answers for the positive benefit of Scotland, showing up strengths as well as weaknesses and, by demonstrating to the government areas in which specific action was required, ‘to add to the quantum of happiness’ in the country. The results were gathered together and published as the Old Statistical Account, a massive 20-volume work.
A selection from the wealth of sociological information contained in the OSA is presented here in a lively and accessible form, with extensive quotation from all parts of the country. It is a remarkable and unique insight into the lives of Scottish people from very diverse parishes — urban and rural, rich and poor, highland and lowland. The original questionnaire is included in facsimile as an appendix.
This book is an essential resource for those studying social history and will be of immense interest to all those wishing to learn more of Scotland in earlier times.

The Surname Detectives $14.95 (List price $30.00)
Investigating Surname Distribution in England, 1086-present day.
Colin D. Rodgers
Manchester University Press 1995
(from the introduction) “From the author of the best-selling Family tree detective, this helpful guide provides the amateur genealogist or family historian with the skills to research the distribution and history of a surname.
Colin Rogers uses a sample of 100 names, many of them common, to follow the migration of people through the centuries. If you have one of the 100 or so sample surnames, the book maps out your surname distribution through the centuries. If not, you can still learn how to find out where your namesakes live now, how they have moved about the country through time, and how the name started out – quite probably in the medieval period as a place name, a nickname or Christian name, or as a tame based on your ancestor’s job (like Carpenter or Smith).
Colin Rogers finishes this fascinating book by showing how the distribution of surnames can be studied irrespective of the size of the surrounding population, and reaches some interesting conclusions about which names are more reliable guides to migration since the fourteenth century.
The surname detective is a must for genealogists and surname study addicts, but it also has much to interest the professional historian. population geographer and geneticist.”

Irish-American Landmarks $15.00  (In print at $52.00) (new book)
John A. Barnes
Gale Research, 1995
(from the back cover) For three Centuries the Irish have maintained a special relationship with America. At the height of the potato famine in the mid-19th Century, more than a million Irish traded what little they owned for passage aboard coffin-ships, hoping that a better life waited oil new shores. Treated as second-class citizens upon arrival, they embarked upon yet another extraordinary journey to become a political, religious and economic force in the United States. Author John A. Barnes, driven by his passion to discover his own ethnic heritage, takes you to the sites and memorials of the Irish in America.
Visit Michigan’s Emerald Isle, where breakaway Mormon leader Jesse James Strang proclaimed himself king Discover Doyle’s Cafe in Boston-a century-old monument to two great Irish-American passions: hospitality and politics a Find out how James Concannon, a native of the Aran Islands, brought wine-making to California a Learn about Margaret Gaffney Haughey, who rose from poverty to open orphanages and asylums in New Orleans and became the first woman in the U.S. to be memorialized with a statue.
With a timeline and more than 100 photos, Irish-American Landmarks is certain to delight anyone with an interest in the amazing story of the Irish in this country.
